DAYTONA BEACH – Fleming Island High senior Andrew Miller doubled down on his recent Clay County Cross Country title with a win at the Embry-Riddle Asics Classic race held Sat., Sept. 16 at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach.
Next race for area runners will be the prestigious Katie Caples Invitational featuring most of the best runners in Florida with middle school races kicking off the festival at 5 p.m. at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville. Fleming Island took sixth in the elite race at Caples with Miller top finisher at 16:59 for 19th place.
Miller, who won in a relatively slow time of 16:49.50, noted the hills, heat and humidity of the race in a flrunners.com interview after the race.
Miller, who has the Fleming Island High school record of 15:47, ran as a solo runner in the race as Hurricane Irma changed many teams travel plans and the cancellation of the Ponte Vedra High meet the same day had teams scrambling to find open races.
Miller won the Embry-Riddle race of Belen Jesuit’s Joshua Collins, who ran 16:55.45 and New Smyrna Beach’s Aidan O’Gorman who ran 16:56.47 as the only runners under 17 minutes. Collins finished fourth in the Class 3A last year with a 15:40.10 in Tallahassee with O’Gorman 17th also in Class 3A. Belen Jesuit was third in Class 3A last year.

Stratton fell during the race. Sergio Arellano also finished for St. Johns at 110th in 23:31.87 with Zachary Buce in at 124th in 25:41.27.

In the the girls race, Fleming Island High freshman Emma Millson outdid senior teammate Julie Franzoni to take top team honors with a quick 22:14.84 time for 10th place overall. Franzoni finished 17th in 22:42.56 after outsprinting Millson for the Clay County cross country title a week ago.
In team points, Fleming Island finished fifth with 140 points with St. Brendan High School taking top team with 45 points over Dr. Phillips’ 85 points.
Isabella Bartczak of Dr. Phillips won the girls race in 19:37.84 ahead of St. Brendan’s Noemi Kerjean’s 20:37.18. Bartczak finished 23rd in last year’s Class 4A state race.
