GREEN COVE SPRINGS – At the request of the Green Cove Springs Police Department, the Grit Foundation helped establish the GCSPD K9 unit today by donating their first four-legged officer, K9 Grit. K9 Grit is the first dog the Grit Foundation has donated to one of its affiliated departments but has pending requests from other departments.

K9 Grit is a 13-month-old German Shepard who has been paired with Officer Garrett Crider and will be a dual-purpose working dog. In addition to becoming familiar with his new station, his fellow officers and bonding with K9 Officer Crider, K9 Grit will be completing an additional 480 hours of required training beginning in August. K9 Grit was purchased for $7,500 from Valor Working Dogs with all pre-purchase examinations and X-rays donated by local veterinarian Sherri Cone with Plantation Animal Hospital in Fleming Island.

Grit Foundation President, Matt Harrison issued the following statement:

“We couldn’t be more excited about K9 Grit and the team he is joining. Chief Asdot and the team at Green Cove Springs Police Department are a group of incredibly professional and dedicated law enforcement officers who embody the word “grit.” After spending time with them, we are confident that not only is K9 Grit going to find a great home there, but he will do the community a great amount of good. We cannot wait to see the impact he has on crime and drugs in the City of Green Cove Springs.”

Accompanying today announcement, Green Cove Springs Police Chief Derek Asdot said, “The Grit Foundation has made it possible for the Green Cove Springs Police Department to embark on this adventure. We are forever grateful and are looking forward to welcoming the Green Cove Springs Police family and the City of Green Cove Springs, to our new officer, K9 Grit. A big “THANK YOU” goes to the Grit Foundation for your support and your dedication to the many communities you serve.”

The Grit Foundation became the official charity of the Green Cove Springs Police Department last February. As the official charity, the Grit Foundation works to meet any needs that are not covered by GCSPD’s operating budget. In addition to the GCSPD account through the Grit Foundation, a separate account has been established by the Grit Foundation to support the Green Cove Springs Police Department’s new K9 unit.
