With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joey Patten. He was surrounded by his family on his final days. Joey grew up in Green Cove Springs, Florida with his parents, Joe and Doris, and sisters Patsy Rifenbark, Penny Hopper, and Pamela Wilson. He graduated from Clay High School in 1968 and worked at Gustafson’s Dairy throughout his school years.

While attending the University of South Florida, he began working for Scotty's Hardware stores, delivering building supplies to construction sites. After graduating, he moved into a management training program and advanced through many leadership positions over the years. He became the Senior Vice President of Human Resources and was ultimately a member of the company's ownership group. He influenced many people throughout his career by exhibiting the values of hard work, determination, and endurance. He was a mentor and friend to countless associates and is fondly remembered for his enthusiastic smile and willingness to help anyone in need. He found humor in the little things and enjoyed placing bets with his colleagues on business outcomes. He retired in 2006 after nearly 40 years with Scotty’s.

Joey was married to his loving and devoted wife, Cathy, whom he adored, for 52 years. As a young couple, they lived in various areas of Florida before settling in Winter Haven. After retirement, they moved to Jacksonville where they enjoyed time on the St. Johns River and at Jacksonville beach. Joey was a proud father, grandfather (“Poppa”), and great-grandfather who regularly attended dance and piano recitals, sporting events, and school programs in support of his family. He was always there to help his family, give advice, and share a laugh. He saw the positive side of every situation and encouraged others to do the same. He leaves those he loved with a legacy of courage, hope, and perseverance.

Joey is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Patten; children Natalie Patten, Melanie Nielson (Jeff), and Joe Patten (Claire); as well as his grandchildren Chloe Harris (Dylan), Joey Smith, Ella Patten, Molly Kate Patten, Jay Nielson, and Max Nielson; and one great grandson, Waylon Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents Doris and Joe Patten.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in Joey’s memory to the Shepherd Center, a not-for-profit hospital specializing in medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injuries.
