Indians get three region champs

Keystone Heights’ Dan Dodd is strong force for strong Indians contingency.

ST. AUGUSTINE – Keystone Heights boys weightlifting earned three region champions who head directly to the April 6-7 state championships with a handful awaiting their shot to complete the state lists after Saturday’s region 5-1A championships hosted by Keystone Heights High School.

Dan Dodd, Semione Carter and Brandon Spivey dominated their respective weight classes for their titles and will lead yet another strong contingency of Keystone Heights lifters to the state meet. Keystone Heights has had a history of top 10 finishes in the past five years with a share of the Class 1A title with Baker County in 2014. Keystone Heights was third last year to Madison County and Baker County; 22-21-14.

Spivey, a senior in the 139 pound class, pumbed up an impressive 500 pound total to win decisively with second place a distant 425 pounds. Spivey had lifts of 265 pounds on the bench press and 235 in the clean and jerk for the win. Spivey was second at 139 last year with a 470 total; second by 20 pounds.

Semione, a junior in the 219 pound weight class, racked up 580 total pounds with a 300 pound bench press and a 280 clean and jerk to hold off late charges of 555 from teammate Cameron Musselman, a senior, and two lifters at 550 pounds for the win. Carter had to overcome a 325 bench press from Steven Aldana of Belleview who took the early lead, but could only clean and jerk 225 to fall to third place. Musselman equaled Semione’s bench press of 300, but could only get a 255 clean and jerk.

Dodd, a junior in the Unlimited class, hoisted 635 pounds to win by 20 pounds over Tavares junior John Douglas who could not match Dodd’s 295 pound clean and jerk. Dodd out benched Douglas by five pounds; 340-335, to take a slim lead.

Winning lifters at regions automatically qualify for the April 6-7 state meet in Panama City Beach with top six placers awaiting lift total comparison to fill in the state rosters.

In the top six for Keystone Heights were Holden Knapp and Briar Schenck, fifth and sixth at 119; C.J. Parks and Tucker Kicklighter, second and fourth at 129; Jess Donahue, fifth at 139; Briar Smith and Hunter Stitt, fourth and fifth at 154; Alex Cruz and Kaleb Vojnovski, second and sixth at 183; Josh Hughes, fifth at 199 and Musselman, second at 219.
