JACKSONVILLE – Oakleaf High’s 138 pound wrestler Ethan Gustillo won his second individual title at the Kiwanis Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bishop Snyder High School. Oakleaf finished third in team points with Camden County winningwith 269.50 points off six individual titles. Buchholz was second at 190.50 with Oakleaf third at 168.50. Sixteen teams competed.

“We have a lot of young guys, but just enough guys to score some team points,” said Oakleaf coach Wes Champs. “Our veterans are trying to teach the young guys the game of surviving these full day tournaments.”

In 2016, Gustillo won the same title, but also the most outstanding wrestler trophy.

“I’m wrestling a little smarter this year,” said Gustillo, who as a junior last year missed a state meet berth last year by one match at 126 pounds at the region 1-3A championship meet. “I still try to stay aggressive, but not let myself get in bad situations. My confidence is much better. “

At the district 1-3A championship meet last year, Gustillo finished third after losing 7-4 to Fleming Island’s Jacob Sandoval in the semifinals, then lost 11-5 to Sandoval in the region 1-3A consolation semi-final.

“I bumped up to 138 over the summer to make my strength better,” said Gustillo. “I conditioned a lot harder over the summer and attended some camps.

Gustillo advanced with a 6-0 win, a pin and a tech win of 18-3 over Camden County’s Charles Morton Jr. before beating Colin Tanner of Menendez 8-0 in the final.

Also in the finals at Bishop Snyder, freshman Abdiert Escobar faced off against Camden County’s DeMarquis Hall and lost 8-3. Escobar advanced with two late pins in his preliminary matches.

At 132, another freshman, David Parkes for Oakleaf, lasted until the third period against Camden County’s Adam Allwine. Parkes advanced with three pins in the prelims.

At 182, Isaiah Graham place third with a forfeit after winning a 15-2 decision in his consolation semifinal over Nathan Manning of Fernandina Beach.

At 195, Dexter Moore took third with a pin over Kevin Castro of Mandarin. Moore had a 23 second pin in his consolation quarterfinal.

At 285, Demonte Richmond lost by pin to Aaron Menden of Buchholz to finish as runner-up. Richmond had three pins to the final.
