GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Clay County Grand Jury indicted four people for the 2016 murder of Kolton Thomas Shearer, 18, of Middleburg.

Ozell McNabb Jr., 24; Taurean Andretti Johnson, 30; Jordan Tyler Coleman, 22; and Alexandra Grace Schreffler, 23, all of Green Cove Springs, face one count each of first-degree or pre-meditated murder and armed robbery for the July 10, 2016 killing. McNabb and Johnson both face one count each of possession of a weapon or ammo by a convicted felon.

The grand jury handed down the indictments on March 1.

Shearer was fatally shot in the abdomen while inside a home at 1956 County Road 16A during a reported robbery about 2 a.m. Police said another man, David Cody Levo, was shot in the thigh and recovered after surgery at Orange Park Medical Center.

Schreffler and Coleman lived at the residence, according to arrest reports.

While investigating the case, detectives said McNabb, Coleman, Johnson and Schreffler, were with Shearer and two other people at the home on County Road 16A near Idlewild Avenue around 2 a.m. The reason for the meeting was not known, but investigators said they believe robbery was the motive for the incident. They said someone in the group of four started shooting, killed Shearer and struck Levo in the leg.

Police said after the shooting, an undisclosed person drove Shearer about a mile to a Kangaroo gas station for help. The driver was not injured and tried to save Shearer by giving him CPR in the station parking lot.

After the shooting, McNabb fled to the Orangedale area of St. Johns County where he hid from authorities. The CCSO then called on the U.S. Marshals Service to aid in the search for McNabb who later called the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and told them he was tired of running. He was later transferred to Green Cove Springs for his first court appearance.

According to records with the Clay County Clerk of Court, McNabb is a convicted felon having been given probation for conspiracy to commit armed robbery in June 2015.

Shearer, a Middleburg High graduate, was on summer break from South Georgia State College where he was attending on a baseball scholarship.

“Kolton was an all-American boy who loved the outdoors, fishing, the beach and his family,” stated his mother Angie Shearer through the Clay County Sheriff’s Office victim’s advocate around the time of his death.” He had a passion for baseball and excelled academically. He was looking forward to becoming an engineer as that was his life-long dream.”

The indictments now pave the way for the Fourth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office to move on and prepare for the trial phase in the case.
