Faith walk: Good for Evil

Some things that Jesus taught us to do are very difficult. One of the basic teachings of Jesus is that we are to do good toward those who demonstrate animosity toward us. We are to return good for evil.

Jesus spoke of those who despitefully use us. He clearly told us that we are not to return the same thing to them that they spew upon us.

We think our response to malice demonstrated toward us should be to attack in return. Defend ourselves. Answer anything leveled against us.

But Jesus said we are to do the very opposite of that. His teaching was this:

“You have heard that it has been said, ‘You shall love neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you…”

As we like to say, “That’s easier said than done.” And it is.

Bur following this direction by Jesus is not impossible. In fact, it is uplifting and strengthening for us when we act as Jesus taught us.

First, it gives us a chance to show God’s love to others especially those who really need it.

Second, it allows us to know that we can have the strength of God’s grace in our lives. (We can’t live as Jesus taught us apart from the grace of God.)

We should practice the teachings of Jesus until they are integrated into our own personality. His words then become our first thought when negative situations occur by the actions of others.

This is the answer to insults, personal attacks, road rage, family discord, disloyalty, betrayal on every occasion when anyone acts or speaks against you.

Return good for evil.
