Eric Beverly of Waste Management proudly shows one of the many pounds of pork he delivered to The Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs since the FFA & 4H livestock show and sale at the Clay County Agricultural Fair. Beverly and his staff paid to have the pork – from the three pigs it purchased – professionally processed so it can be donated to families who have food insecurity. Beverly also delivered processed meats from one of the cattle his company bought at the fair. Sorority refreshes children’s park
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – As part of its international commitment to providing healthy and safe environments, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Pi Eta Omega chapter, refreshed the Augusta Savage Friendship Park on May 6. The sorority donated $1,000 to purchase basketball goals, barbecue grills and to erect a trellis where ivy was planted and will be planted yearly. Receiving the check for the playground was Mayor Mitch Timberlake along with Vice Mayor Council member Constance Butler, who are shown here holding the check. The 1908 Playgrounds Project was launched in 2014 to ensure that children will have safe and inviting places to play. The goal is to have 1,908 playgrounds and recreational spaces restored, refreshed and renewed by 2018. The efforts of this chapter were etched on a golden plaque as you enter the playground with the date and name of the chapter. The park is named after African American Augusta Savage sculptor, teacher and advocate for black artists. Born Augusta Christine Fell in Green Cove Springs, on February 29, 1892, Savage and was an important member of the Harlem Renaissance.
