FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High volleyball burst through a week of erratic play with losses to district 4-8A foes Buchholz and Bartram Trail plus a win over Creekside, Fletcher and Oakleaf. The Golden Eagles bounced back with a resounding win over Oakleaf High School Thursday night at Fleming Island High School.
Oakleaf, with a dominating win over an unbeaten Clay High team on September 5, had built up a 4-1 season record with a lone loss to Buchholz in four games last week and were set to give the Golden Eagles some rivalry challenge, but Fleming Island’s senior hitters Emily Charbonneau and Kaci Hollenbacher had alternate plans as both combined for 18 scoring shots for coach Amy Walker.
Charbonneau had been the solo scoring force for the Golden Eagles in past games, but Hollenbacher performances, after an opening week of nursing a sore ankle, seemed to strengthen the Fleming Island attack.
With game scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-12, the Fleming Island attack was quick and lethal at the net as Oakleaf’s pair of power hitters; Bryanna Parrett and Challaya Campbell, seemed unable to keep up.
Fleming Island, reversing a three game losing skid; Chiles, Providence and Bartram Trail last week and adding a win over Fletcher on September 6, improved to 6-4, 2-2 in district play, while Oakleaf fell to 4-2, 0-2. Oakleaf will face Bartram Trail (4-1, 2-0) on September 12 with Creekside set for September 14 to complete their first round of district play. Fleming Island has their second match with Bucholz (5-0, 2-0) scheduled for September 11. Bartram Trail’s lone loss is to Fletcher High.
In 3-7A, Middleburg (2-3, 1-0), lost 3-0 to 8A-Leon on defeated Creekside in three games with district games against Ed White (0-6) and St. Augustine (5-2, 1-1) sandwiched around visits to Ponte Vedra and Oakleaf. Against 8A-Creekside, Middleburg senior hitter Mallory Roney exploded for 18 scoring kills in 40 attempts with Jillian Bemis adding eight.
In the Leon loss, Roney and Bemis combined for 17 scoring shots against the unbeaten Lady Lions (5-0).
In district 4-6A, Ridgeview is on top of the district lineup at 4-0 with a 5-2 overall record with losses to 8A-Oakleaf and 8A-Fleming Island. The Lady Panthers have a handful of net hitters with junior Janae Sanders leading the group with 50 kills with Kaubrey Brown and Saige Rivers both adding 40 more. Sanders is hitting an astounding 58 percent of her scoring shots.
Orange Park is at 1-4, 1-1 in district 4-6A play with a September 5 district win over Wolfson.
In 4-5A, Keystone Heights (3-2, 2-1) has a district loss to district leader Taylor-Peirson with wins over Bradford and Fort White to set up a five game district slate of Bradford, Fort White, Taylor, Newberry and Interlachen through September.
For the Lady Indians, sophomore Madison Heskett leads the scoring spree with 48 kills with senior Hannah Jones at 27. Keystone Heights is strong serving with Emily Loose, Jones and Jessi Yeldell all in double figures; 13, 12, 12, respectively, in service aces. Yeldell is lead blocker with 18 snuffs.
