GREEN COVE SPRINGS – With 32 of the 33 newly-selected members of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee on hand to be sworn in, the Green Cove Springs City Council Chambers was packed when called to order Tuesday night.

Mayor Van Royal opened by proclaiming Green Cove Springs a Monarch City. A monarch city is one that has been designated as a place which actively supports the monarch butterfly population’s growth. Present for the proclamation were members of the Green Cove Springs Gardening Club.

In the final portion of the awards and recognition segment, a presentation was given by AMIkids of Clay County. Many boys involved with AMIKids spoke of the benefits of the program and how their academics and personal lives have improved during their time there.

The consent agenda items all passed unanimously with none pulled for further discussion.

In the public hearing, recommendations were provided on ideas for a CDBG-CV Coronavirus Cycle grant application with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. A presentation to the council discussed different types of projects which could be done with a grant if it was applied for and accepted. One of the biggest goals of the grant would be to use the grant for the benefit of low- and moderate-income people or address needs.

Two proposals were made.

The first was for the refurbishing of the Auditorium at the Augusta Savage Community Center. The second was for the setup and configuration of a public wi-fi network in the core city area.

After discussion, it was decided that the better use of the CDBG-CV Coronavirus Cycle grant application would be to refurbish the auditorium at the Augusta Savage Community Center. The council approved it, 5-0.
