EAGLE HARBOR - Lakeside Junior High School soccer returned home with two trophies Monday night after the girls and boys teams both beat Green Cove Springs Junior High for the Northeast Florida Athletic Conference titles at the Clay County Soccer Complex in Eagle Harbor.
The girls team, coached by Clinton Lyons to a 7-3 season record with two 2-1 losses to Green Cove Springs, got a hat trick performance from Madison Johnson to fuel their 3-0 win over the defending champion and unbeaten Cougars (11-0), coached by Heather Labelle.
For the Lady Gators, breakaway surges from Ryanne Robinson down the middle of the field kept the Cougars' defense, led by Megan Cobb and Addison Adams, on their heels throughout the game. Lakeside goalie Emily Ames survived a penalty kick just 10 yards in front of her with a cross bar hit and made half a dozen diving saves off Cougar shots on goal.
The Gators' boys team, coached by Roger Dailey, clung to a 1-0 winning score off a breakaway goal from Ethan Medlock that got past Cougar defender Jack Wilkening.
Green Cove Springs repeatedly penetrated the Gator defensive front with runs from Daniel Laureano and Donavin Montoya, but Gator goalie Jonah Cook came up with crowded saves in front of the net.
