DELAND – After giving up a first quarter touchdown pass, the Fleming Island High girls flag football team locked down on defense and came back with their own big plays to win 21-6 over Deland High in the region 1-2A semifinal game at Spec Martin Stadium in Deland.

Fleming Island advances to play Dr. Phillips of Orlando on Tues., May 16. In the opposite end of the region bracket, East Bay of Gibsonton, who beat St. Cloud, will travel to Plant High of Tampa, who beat East Lake of Tarpon Springs.

In the Joseph Pinkos Girls football rankings, a statewide rating system, Tampa Plant (13-2) is the top-ranked team in Class 2A with Dr. Phillips (15-0) at number two. East Bay (13-2) is ranked fifth. Fleming Island (7-2) is ranked 20th.

In last year’s Class 2A state bracket, Fleming Island beat Apopka in their semifinals, but lost to eventual state runnerup Martin County 13-7 in the region finals. Dr. Phillips lost 13-8 to Martin County in the region semfinals. Tampa Plant lost 19-6 to Martin County in the state semifinals. The state championship tournament is set for May 19-20 at Gainesville’s Citizen’s Field.

With an early 6-0 against Deland, Fleming Island quickly tied the game with a 27 yard run from Ashley Byrd and a PAT from Mallory Sinsel to take the lead at 7-6 in the second quarter.

Later in the second quarter, quarterback Lizzy Labas found wideout Aubrey Burke for a 19 yard touchdown pass with Hope Rozier scoring the PAT and giving Fleming Island a 14-6 lead into the half.

In the third period, neither team scored.

In the fourth period, Fleming Island scored their final touchdown on a Hope Rozier one yard run with Burke getting the PAT for the 21-6 final score.

Burke snagged an interception on the ensuing Deland drive to seal the game.

For the season, Labas is 71 percent on her passes for 834 yards with Hope Rozier top yardage on passes with 300. Burke has 191 pass catching yards with Sinsel at 171.

Rushing yardage is led byh Rozier with 193 with Byrd adding 165. Burke is tops in interceptions with 10 with Byrd snaring seven passes on defense.

Scoring leaders are Rozier with 59 points, Burke with 39 and Sinsel with 37.

Rozier, Burke and Sinsel all have 39 flag pulls on defense.
