Fleming Island boys golf second in district

FLEMING ISLAND – With Peyton Billings shooting a 70 score on his home course; Fleming Island Golf Club, the Fleming Island High boys golf team finished a close second to Forest High of Ocala Tuesday afternoon. Forest High was the Class 3A runnerup last year by a stroke (616) to Gulf Coast High School. Winter Park was third at 617.

Billings, with his score getting second overall to Forest junior Gray Albright, the defending district champion, pushed the pace for the Golden Eagles as Jacob Godwin nailed a 75 for the Golden Eagles second finisher. Forest, with a 292 team score, won the district title in 2017 with Fleming Island, 305, second as Billings and Godwin both shot 71s.

Forest, Fleming Island and third place Columbia advance to the region 1-3A tournament on October 23 at the Killearn Country Club in Tallahassee. Ocala Forest is also the defending region champion with Albright winning again with a 69 score; first ahead of host Tallahassee Chiles. Albright finished fifth at the Class 3A championship tournament at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey in the Hills. No Fleming Island or Oakleaf golfers, also in district 2-3A, advanced to the state meet.

Ocala Forest finished with a 71, a 79, an 80 and an 84 fo their 299 score with Fleming Island at 319 as Chris Ostrow came in at 84 and Tyler Broadus finished with a 90.

Columbia High of Lake City took third at 333 with a 76 top score.

For Buchholz, individual qualifiers to the region tournament were Tony Liu with a 75 and Michael Wu with a 76.

For the Fleming Island girls, Alyssa Merrilees scored a 104 to lead the Lady Golden Eagles to a third place team finish behind Buchholz and Columbia, who scored 365 and 385 respectively.

Fleming Island finished with 442 with Sarah Theus at 11, DeeDee Kuhlenkamp at 11, Kathleen Francis at 116 and Summer Knight at 129.

Oakleaf High’s Skyler Ricks shot 121 with teammate Samantha Godfrey at 130 to advance as individual to regions.

The region 1-3A tournament is scheduled for Haile Plantation in Gainesville on Wed. Oct. 24. Buchholz was region runnerup last year to Niceville.

Green, Smart push Lady

Broncos to second in district

Middleburg High senior golfer Victoria Green pushed to an 82 score and teammate Lydia Smart finished with an 107 on the Hyde Park Golf Club in Jacksonville to push Middleburg to a second place team finish in the district 5-2A golf championships held Mon., Oct. 15. Middleburg was the defending district champion ahead of Bishop Kenny.

At Monday’s district 5-2A championship, Bishop Kenny reversed the finish order to win the team title with 383 strokes led by a superb 71 score from senior Lacey Tucker who outpaced the field with Kenny’s second finisher at a distant 97.

Green, a state tournament qualifier two years ago and as a freshman, has a shot to return this year with Smart improving her game to offer a strong 1-2 punch for coach Daniel Pearce. Middleburg finished with a 440 total.

Finishing out the Lady Broncos scoring were Jewel Taylor (110), Madison Vicknair (141) and Brittney Sallet (151).

Also advancing to the region championships to be held at the Blue Sky Country Club in Ponte Vedra on Mon., Aug. 22., were Ridgeview High’s Emily Turbeville (111) and Autumn McKee (116) plus Orange Park freshman Hannah Kelly (131).

Raiders third in boys district golf

At Eagle Harbor Country Club, Orange Park High’s boys golf team took third in the district 5-2A championship led by sophomore Joseph Joyner’s 91 score with two Raiders; Chandler Ritchey and Kyle Moore both shooting 92s to boost the Raider 371 score. Bishop Kenny was top team with 307 with two golfers in the 70s; winner Clay Tucker with a 71 leading the Crusaders who had three golfers with scores in the 70s. In second place, Wolfson High scored 361 behind an outstanding 68 from Will Davis.

In the individual qualifiers for the region tournament, to be held Tues., Oct. 23 at the Palencia Golf Course in St. Augustine. Ridgeview’s Logan Bialek scored a 113 to advance. Orange Park’s final scorers were Cameron Little at 96 and Dylan Little at 135. Middleburg had no region qualifiers.

Clay sends one in state-strong district

Clay High golfer Andrew Lonsdale was the lone area region qualifier from the state-strong district 6-2A tournament that features state powers Ponte Vedra (Class 2A champions with state champion Stewart Slayden and runnerup Davis Lee both returners) and Nease High Schools.

With Ponte Vedra winning the district title with a 292, with four golfers under 80, and Nease finishing second at 315, with two golfers tied for overall top finishers with 69 scores, Pedro Menendez High took the third spot at 330.

Nease’s top two golfers; Logan Underwood (34th in 2A last year) and Jake Geary both finished with 69s with Slayden in at 74 for Ponte Vedra with Lee at 72. Ponte Vedra’s top finisher with a 70 was Justin Ortiguera who was 56th at the 2A championships last year.

Clay had no girls qualify for regions out of the district 6-2A tournament.

Ponte Vedra and Nease finished first and second in the girls district 6-2A with Matanzas third. Clay had no region qualifiers.

Spartan boys golf third in

district 4-1A

An 82 from Henry Dinkins led the St. Johns Country Day School boys golf squad as the Spartans took third in district 4-1A Tues., Oct. 16 at the Slammer and Squire Golf Course in Jacksonville.

Bolles, at 301, defended their district team title ahead of Christ’s Church Academy’s 339 with the Spartan boys scoring 354. Top three teams advance to the region 2-1A tournament on Mon. Oct. 22 at the Golf Club at South Hampton in Jacksonville.

Behind Dinkins were Dru Detlefsen at 86, Jackson Powers at 90, Justin Grogg at 96 and Will Albright at 98.

Bolles had the two top finishers; both at 71 with a third golfer in at 78.

Episcopal won the region 2-1A title last year ahead of Providence with Bolles sending just one state qualifier, senior Dragon Theam, who finished 14th in 1A.

For the Spartan girls, senior Rachel Thompson shot a 94 to put St. Johns in second in team points behind Bolles. Bolles had 313 while St. Johns finished at 431.

St. Johns’ finishers included Addy Vogt at 108, Alexa Radord at 11, Carolina Hollis at 118 and Claire Trammell at 132.

Jackson, with a 78 with sister Candace finishing at 82, and the Keystone Heights High girls team won the district 4-1A title over Oak Hall on Mon. Oct. 16 with a 334-401 edge.

Thomas 82 puts Keystone Heights at third

Keystone Heights High sophomore golfer Tyler Thomas shot at 82 with Wyatt Thomas putting for an 84 to get the Indians to a third place finish at the district 6-1A tournament held at the UF Golf Course on Mon., Oct. 15. The Indians advance to the region 2-1A tournament set for Mon. Oct. 22 at the Golf Club at South Hampton in Jacksonville.
