Clay High wideout Christian Swilley had a scoring opportunity just miss on a long pass in the first half that was just out of reach, but behind the Fleming Island defense. Swilley returns as a running back for the Blue Devils offense.
One key figure in the 2017 version will be returning tight end Nick Ferendo, who has become a reliable, over -the-middle pass catcher for either of two Fleming Island quarterbacks.
Returning senior fullback Chauncey Garrison pushed for 151 yards and this go-ahead score in the first half that tied the game at 7-7 in the first half. Garrison suffered season-ending injury in game, but is set to run again in 2017.
Returning senior tailback Anfernee McCaskill caused fits for Clay defense with his outside sweeps getting yards including this high-stepping touchdown in the first half that put Fleming Island uip 21-7.
Clay High coach Joshua Hoekstra was frustrated throughout the game with a series of dropped passes and fumbles that stalled Blue Devil scoring efforts.
Clay running back Colin Wilson, now at Louisville, caught a 53 yard scoring pass ahead of Wake Forest commit Ryan Smenda to score the first touchdown of the game. Wilson scored both Clay touchdowns.

Fleming Island High senior linebacker and utility player Jackson Bull returns after he scored a critical touchdown to put Fleming Island up 14-7.
Fleming Island, with Damenyum Springs starting his first official season as head coach, pulled off a 24-14 upset win over Clay High in 2016, but now must travel to Clay High for the rematch. Both teams graduated a slew of top-tier players and will be putting new faces on the field in one of the county’s biggest rivalries.
