FDLE launches investigation into Sheriff Daniels

CLAY COUNTY – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation in Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels after the agency and Gov. Ron DeSantis received a letter from within the sheriff’s office.

The letter was written after Daniels claimed he was being stalked by a woman who had been having a long-term affair with the sheriff. The woman, Cierra Smith, was taken to the Clay County Jail on May 6 after she and Daniels agreed to meet in Oakleaf. Daniels told a sergeant at the scene to arrest Smith for stalking. An undersheriff and chief at the sheriff’s office agreed there wasn’t any probable cause for an arrest, and a deputy drove the woman home.

According to several reports, Daniels was outraged during the June 14 patrol briefing where he reportedly used profanity and threats against the person leaking information. “We are concerned about not only the reputation of the Sheriff’s office, but also in our safety,” Folio said after reportedly receiving a copy of the letter.
