You may think you cannot determine your own appearance. But you can. And you can do it without cosmetics or plastic surgery.

Proverbs 15:13 teaches that the face is the outer expression of your inner self. And the way you can be sure that your inner quality makes you the person you want the world to see is to follow the Scripture. This is what Proverbs says: “A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance.” The condition of your heart determines your countenance that the world sees.

“I don’t like the looks of that man,” Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said to an aide. “A person can’t help what he looks like, Mr. President,” the aide replied. “Oh, yes, he can,” Mr. Lincoln answered.

And Lincoln was right. If your inner self is full of turmoil, distress and grief, it will show in your countenance. Inner peace, joy and a positive view of life based on the love and grace of God will also be reflected in the person you show to the people around you.

I like positive people. I’m sure you do, too. Who would not rather be around someone who expresses joyful, happy thoughts? In fact, I look for those people so that I can spend time with them.

You probably do the same thing even though you may not realize you doing it. It is just more pleasant to be around a joyful, happy person.

Now, the next thing is for you to be that person with whom others want to fellowship. Keep in mind that you can determine the quality of your inner self. And that is what will determine what others see in you.

Proverbs 4:23 says “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” That is the standard. When you do this you will look better, gain friends and enjoy your life.

“The outcome of your life will be determined by your outlook on life.”
