“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…” This statement is written in one of the most treasured documents of the United States – the Declaration of Independence. That document is a powerful foundation stone for the political structure of our country.
But is it true that “all men are created equal?” Even politically, do all men (people) have the same God-given (unalienable) rights?
Certainly all people are not created the same economically … or physically … or intellectually … or geographically.
So is there anything valid about this notion of equality? I answer “Yes.” In the eyes of God there is equal status for all of His creation.
First, God loves everyone equally. The Scripture says, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes …” So He declares His love for every person – “the world.” And He says that the result of that love is for everyone - “whoever.”
Next, Jesus died for the sins of every person. “He died for all.” (2 Cor. 5:13) “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:8)
An invitation to receive Christ was given at the close of a Gospel service in a church in the nation’s capital. A high ranking, well known government official responded and was standing at the altar for prayer. An obviously poor man in disheveled apparel also walked forward for salvation and stood beside him. Some people in the church were alarmed that the poor man was standing beside the high ranking man. Realizing the concern, the Pastor spoke about it to the congregation. He declared, “The ground is level at the foot of the cross.”
And there is the answer. Everyone is equal in the cross of Jesus Christ.
