FLEMING ISLAND - The Golden Eagle Boys Tennis Team hosted No. 2- Seed Seminole Fighting Noles in region 1-4A action Tues., April 18 at Fleming Island High School. Fleming Island won the district 1-4A tournament with Lake Mary beating Seminole in the district 2-4A.

Fleming Island, with the region first round win, will host Lake Mary on Thurs., April 20 at Fleming Island High School in region round two play.

Fleming Island came out on fire as they rolled through match after match. By sweeping all five singles matches, the Golden Eagles did not have to put their Doubles teams on the court.

"To take it 5-0 without any doubles, I mean we won it after number two stepped off, so it was good," said Fleming Island coach Chip Chadwell. "“All the boys played great. They all did. They worked hard and long, they did everything we asked of them."

With the single victories as follows: David Burns 6-2, 4-6, 10-8; Dixon 6-1, 6-1; Maier 6-2, 6-1; Mark Suhrer 6-2, 6-2; and freshman Logan Zapp 6-1, 7-6, 10-8, the Golden Eagles showed why they are the top seed going into post season after a 5-0 win in the district tournament.

In 2016, Suhrer and Burns advanced to the state meet; Burns in singles, then both in doubles.

Because of a difference in the manor of score keeping, Fleming Head Coach Chip Chadwell thought Logan Zapp lost the first match and would have to move on to doubles play. With Zapp still on the court, he sent his first duals team on the court. Once Logan came off and the scores were recorded, Chadwell stopped the doubles match to rest his players.

“Logan knows that young man (from Seminole), Mr. Mackler," said Chadwell. "They play on the USTA Juniors together, so he knew he had a tough match. I actually was confused because I thought, the way they were keeping score, that Logan lost the first set."

Fleming Island will face Lake Mary at home, Thursday afternoon at 3 pm.
