Do we ask for wisdom?

Posted

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Wisdom is the strong foundation everything else rests on. It does not need to know the particulars but always judges correctly.

So, what did the wisest man in the Bible ask God for? In 1 Kings 3, Solomon said, “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” He asked for wisdom. He could have asked God for anything but he chose wisdom. Why do you think he did that? Because the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. Because with it comes understanding. It is better than silver or gold and more precious than jewels. There is nothing we could desire that is better. Wisdom will bring long life, riches and honor. It will create a sweet life. With wisdom comes knowledge. None of our adversaries would be able to withstand or contradict it. It turns away evil. It interprets and makes our face shine. It brings humility and meekness. The wise are prudent and discern. Wisdom protects us. We should all want that.

But because Solomon asked for wisdom, look what God said he would also give him. “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for-both wealth and honor-so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”

Without wisdom how would we be able to administer wealth or success? How could we lead? How would we offer wise counsel or make wise decision? How would we draw people to us and through us to God? We couldn’t. Wisdom is the strong foundation everything rests on. It always judges correctly. People are drawn to Godly wisdom and when there are questions, problems or decisions to be made, guess where their head turns; it turns to the wise.

The good news is that God will give us wisdom; “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” We should ask for wisdom.
