Second wave of playwrights arrive in Clay County
For Clamour Theatre Co.’s annual retreat

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Clamour Clamour Theatre Company second annual playwrights' retreat, Clay and Water 2020, begins January 26th and runs through January 30th. Playwrights from all around the country will spend a week in Green Cove Springs, working on new plays, meeting students and interested community members, and participating in free public readings of their works-in-progress every evening.
Five playwrights were selected through a nationwide application process by Clamour, northeast Florida's first small professional resident theatre company. The Retreat is Clamour's way of participating in the development of new work for the stage and bringing national attention to Clay County while they continue to seek a permanent artistic home.
"We were delighted with the success of our first Retreat. They were excellent writers, lovely people, and several of those plays have gone on to further development opportunities. Ivan Faute's LOST SOCK LAUNDROMAT, read here last January, is getting a New York production in 2020. And, one of the plays from our very first event at Spring Park Coffee in 2017, Danielle Wirsansky's LAW MAKERS, is being produced in March in London. So, we are now able to say that we are having an international impact. Not bad for a little company without a roof over its head!" says Artistic Director Elaine Smith.
This year, Clamour has once again invited a group of writers with varying backgrounds and of a diverse age range to give audiences a broad sampling of the kinds of things that can be available to them.
The plays to be read are still in progress, but the subject matter covers an array of themes and genres: ethics, race relations, and learning to stand up for what's right; an historical play about a Southern belle who got involved in a notorious murder case in Victorian England; a comedy about a group of college friends gathering for the unexpected and not entirely approved of wedding of one of their number, and more.
Writers Maximillian Gill, Dana Leslie Goldstein, Franky D. Gonzalez, Kelly McBurnette-Andronicos, and Molly Wagner will be available for two meet-and-greet question and answer sessions currently being arranged with selected Clay County schools to talk with students about the craft and business of playwriting.
The works-in-progress will be read each evening by local actors from Jan. 26 through Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Village Improvement Association Women’s Club at 17 Palmetto Ave. Audience feedback sessions will follow. These readings are free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended but not required. To reserve a seat, call (917) 902-7210 or email reservations@clamourtheatre.org
For more details, visit Clamour's website. www.clamourtheatre.org.
Clay and Water is supported by grants from the Presidential Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, the Capital City Bank Group Foundation, and the Rotary Club of Green Cove Springs.
In addition, numerous individuals and area businesses have contributed to Clamour's "No Starving Artists" Fund which provides a small meal allowance to the writers during their stay. Clamour is grateful to Janet Peterson--doTERRA Essential Oils, Jason Scoggins--Orkin Commercial, Something Special, Two Chic's Eclectic Mix, The Guitar Station, La Casita Restaurant and Exit Magnolia Point Realty for supporting the arts in Clay County.
Sponsorship opportunities still available at info@clamourtheatre.org.

ORANGE PARK – Broadway “Waitress” opens the Broadway Orange Park season on Feb. 10 at the Thrasher-Horne Center on the St. Johns River State College campus, 283 College Dr. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m.
Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this hilarious hit Broadway musical features original music and lyrics by seven-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave" and "Love Song"), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam), original choreography by Lorin Latarro (Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Waiting For Godot), recreated by tour choreographer Abbey O’Brien and original direction by Tony Award® winner Diane Paulus (Hair, Pippin), recreated by tour director Susanna Wolk.
