Clay students invited to enter T-shirt logo design contest
ORANGE PARK – Clay County school students have a shot at winning $100 for the top prize in a T-shirt logo design contest.
Clay Humane, a nonprofit veterinary clinic near Orange Park, is asking students in grades 9 -12 to submit logo designs for the organization’s first-ever T-shirt contest. The winning logo will appear on T-shirts that promote Clay Humane’s annual motorcycle ride fundraiser, Hogs for Dogs.
Original digital artwork must be designed using a program such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator in RGB / 8-bit in black and white only at 300 dots per inch. Files must be submitted as .ai or .esp files and must be no larger than 10 inches tall by 8 inches wide. Original, hand-drawn artwork with pen and ink drawn in black ink or marker without shading on 8.5-inch wide by 11-inch high paper will also be accepted.
Submit all entries and entry form via mail or hand delivery to Clay Humane, 2230 Filmore Street, Orange Park, FL 32065. Forms can be downloaded at http://www.clayhumane.org/news-02052018-tshirt-contest.php. Deadline for submissions is March 6. Clay Humane will notify the contest winner for a high resolution, vector-version of the artwork.

Foundation accepting scholarship applications
FLEMING ISLAND – February 26, 2018 – The Clay County Chamber Foundation Scholarship Program is seeking students who need money for college.
Each year, the Chamber Foundation awards scholarships to high school seniors to support their pursuit of post-secondary education that will develop and enhance skills and knowledge in their chosen fields. All high school seniors in Clay County are encouraged to apply, regardless of academic merit or financial need status.
All high school seniors are encouraged to apply as the scholarship committee will consider all eligible students, and will base award decisions on the entire application, not just test scores, GPA, financial circumstances. All applicants must apply online at claychamber.com/foundation.

Eat a biscuit, help a kid

FLEMING ISLAND – Fleming Island High’s VyStar Academy of Business & Finance is rounding up teams and selling tickets to its first-ever Trivia Night at Maple Street Biscuit Company.
The fun begins at 6 p.m. on March 8 with trivia beginning sharply at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds go to support the VyStar Academy of Business & Finance.
Join your friends, families and neighbors as they compete for prizes in trivia, while supporting the school. There will also be door prizes, food and a silent auction. Tickets are $5 and sponsorships are still available. Candidate workshop scheduled
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The Clay County Supervisor of Elections will offer a candidate workshop on March 6 at 6:30 p.m. for anyone interested in running for public office or wanting to learn about the candidate process.
The program will focus on the fundamentals of filing to become a candidate. It will introduce participants to campaign finance, electronic filing, qualifying methods, requesting voter information, political advertising, sign ordinance, prohibited acts, ethical conduct and other important topics.

The 8th Annual North Florida Genealogy Conference coming
ORANGE PARK – Have been trying to climb your family tree, but the branches don’t seem sturdy enough to make it work? Then, come to the 8th Annual North Florida Genealogy Conference on March 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 461 Blanding Blvd. in Orange Park.
Keynote Speaker Diahan Southard will present “How DNA Made a Family out of Strangers,” “Five Tips to Make Sense of Your DNA Testing” and “Genetic Genealogy; A Get to Know You Guide.” There will 20 different classes for beginners to experts. The cost for the conference is $25 in advance which includes lunch and digital materials and $30 on the morning of the conference.

Music school welcomes new teachers
ORANGE PARK – Orange Park School of Music recently expanded by adding two new music educators.
Elijah Stevens, described as a virtuoso pianist, is taking new piano students of all ages and Chris Kellam, frontman for rock group Blistur, is accepting new guitar and vocal performance students.
Stevens, winner of the 2017 James A. Hefner Historically Black College and University Piano Competition, specializes in the classical genre but grew up playing piano in his church in the Bahamas.
Honored as the “World Premiere Grady-Rayam Principal Accompanist” of the Negro Spiritual Scholarship, Stevens has a bachelor of arts in music from Bethune-Cookman University.
Stevens will offer song writing, piano improvisation, vocal development, ear training and musicianship in his teaching at OPSM.
Kellam, who studied at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, has over 30 years of onstage experience as a full-time musician, vocalist and performer.
While Kellam specializes in rock, blues and metal, he excels at teaching aspiring vocalists how to stay in pitch using their voice correctly to avoid damage and helping the vocal cords when stressed.
Having produced more than 15 albums since 1998, Kellam will be offering in-house recording at OPSM.

Pint-sized home cook competes on “Masterchef Junior”
FLEMING ISLAND – A Fleming Island junior high student is one of 40 pint-sized chefs who will compete in Season Six of MasterChef Junior on the Fox Television Network.
Camson Alvey, 13, of Fleming Island, a student at Lakeside Junior High, gets to find out if he’ll land a coveted Top 24 spot when the debuts March 2 at 8 p.m. The two-hour premiere features award-winning chefs Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi, as well as the return of fan-favorite judge Joe Bastianich.
Alvey was selected during a nationwide search for the best young home cooks between the ages of eight and 13 who now have a chance to showcase their culinary abilities and passion for food. Only the best 12 female and 12 male junior chef-testants will move forward and earn a MasterChef Junior white apron.
In the special, two-hour season premiere, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun/The Boys Are Back In Town,” 40 junior home cooks come to Los Angeles ready to compete for a MasterChef Junior apron. The Top 24 contestants begin their quest for the title in the series’ time period premiere, airing March 9 at 8 p.m.
