Coaches weigh readiness with safety

GREEN COVE SPRINGS - With a March 31 Coronavirus update from the Florida High School Athletics Association (FHSAA), area baseball coaches are encouraged that a proposed May 3 return to some normalcy may still be a possibility to finish their seasons.
“Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow,” said a prophetic Alan Maddox, baseball coach at Keystone Heights. “It’s not fair and it’s tough, but you have to find a way to believe the season will return.”
Middleburg High baseball coach Daniel Pearce says his team is running a gauntlet of emotions in anticipation of the restart.
“Anxious, excited, hesitant, worried, much anticipated, you name it, it all comes to mind about a possible restart May 3,” said Pearce. “The break will be a challenge from a pitching and conditioning standpoint unless they have worked on their own, but I believe there will a hyper focus of the players as there is in the first week of the season.”
From the press release, FHSAA is hoping for a May 3 return and playoffs into June; “In light of the current situation, the FHSAA staff is actively working on creative solutions for the continuance of spring sports,
which could extend through June 30th. The FHSAA does understand the hardships caused by COVID-19 and the inability
to play spring sports. If we are not able to continue spring sports, the FHSAA is working diligently to create a plan regarding
additional eligibility for students who have not been able to participate in spring sports.”
“This is obviously a worldwide epidemic, just do what they say so we can get past it,” said Clay High baseball coach Josh Persinger, 7-4 with a dramatic 2-0 win over Fleming Island on March 13. “Not staying prepared and sharp during the shutdown is like a kid who cheats in class. You are not helping yourself by doing nothing.”
For many of the Clay County teams, the season break came at a time that outstanding play was occurring around the county with St. Johns Country Day School leading the way with a top-rank spot in Class 2A with Oakleaf, Fleming Island, Clay, Keystone Heights and Middleburg all surging from the season start to half season with more wins than losses.
“We were playing pretty good at the end,” said Maddox, 6-2 at the break with a 7-0 win over Middleburg on March 13 and an 18-0 win over Bradford on March 11. “My last face-to-face contact was March 13 after the Middleburg game. I trust that the team is doing at home what they can.”
Both Maddox and Persinger shared their strategies of preparedness and readiness for whatever date the season may return.
“We all have to make adjustments to be as ready as we can whenever it happens,” said Maddox. “I’ve been writing down a lot of ideas of stuff we will have to do in a short period of time.”
For Fleming Island coach Grant Bigilin, 5-3 with the Clay lost his last game of 2020 and one of the younger coaches in the county, the anticipated return is certainly a big deal for the senior players on area teams.
“I think it would be great for the seniors and rest of the guys who have worked so hard to get to this point and deserve to finish the season,” said Bigilin. “This is an unprecedented time and just goes to show you should never take anything for granted because you never know when your ‘last game’ may be.”
So much so that the seniors deserved a finishing run, Persinger noted that his network of coaches have bantered about an idea of a summer league between area teams in order to showcase the talent on the fields prior to the shutdown.
“In church, we hear that this is not a time to think obstacle, but to think opportunity and hope,” said Persinger. “If a player has a weakness; ankle strength, pitch recognition, overall fitness, take this time to improve that weakness. To sit around and feel bad is not productive. I think of the sleep mode on the computer; when the lid goes up, you have just a slight delay to get back to the computer being ready to go.”
Middleburg High assistant coach Bob Adamson, also one of the more tenured area coaches between Ridgeview and Middleburg high schools, is still enthusiastic about the return; almost equal to a second opening day.
“There is a magic about being a participant and spectator in the great game of baseball,” said Adamson. “Getting back to it even if just briefly will bring a lot of comfort and peace.”

“I believe this abrupt ending was indeed devastating for our student athletes, especially the seniors, but I know they and their coaches would give anything to play again.
