MACCLENNY – Clay High senior Marcaun Robinson was the lone Clay County weightlifter to crack the Baker County dominance at the region 3-1A weightlifting championships held Sat., March 24 at Baker County High School.
With Baker County High dominating the team points with 63 total points above runnerup Suwannee High’s 27 and Bradford County’s 24, Robinson upended a four man blitzkrieg by Wildcat lifters with his title at 183 pounds. Robinson also won the weight class at the district championships, also with Baker County winning the team title. Ridgeview, second at districts, finished fourth with 22 points with Clay sixth with 15 and Orange Park seventh with 11.
Robinson’s win came with a 595 pound total with a 335 pound bench press and a 260 clean and jerk that Taylor High’s Cade Johnson blasted the field with a 305 clean and jerk. Johnson had the lowest bench press of the weight class at 270.
Orange Park’s David Araujo finished second at 199, 85 pounds off the top total of 685 pounds. Ridgeview landed two second place finishes with Jaiden Turner second at 154, but 55 pounds off the top lifter; John Green of Baker County, and Narongsak Kunsuwan second at 119 by just 20 pounds to Carson Padgett of Baker County, seventh in Class 1A last year.
Lifters with region titles automatically qualify for the state meet in Panama City Beach on April 6-7 with the remaining slots determined by weight totals from all regions combined leaving top six placers hopeful that their showing at regions will be enough.
