JACKSONVILLE –Clay High track sprinter Erykah Murray, a state weightlifting champion just two months ago, has a sprint title as her target as she showed off speed with her proven power with top four finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the district 4-2A track and field championships held Wed., April 12 at the Bolles School in Jacksonville. Ridgeview sophomore hurdler Glenn Rodgers also won a district title in the 110 meter high hurdles.

Teams and top four athletes return to Bolles on April 25 for the region 1-2A track and field championships with top four finishers advancing the state championships at the IMG Academy in Bradenton May 5-6.

In the team scoring, Bolles won the women’s title with 250 points with Bishop Kenny second with 104. Clay was fourth with 54 and Ridgeview took fifth with 51 points.

For the boys, Bishop Kenny won over Bolles 170-137.50 with Ridgeview third at 110 and Clay eighth at 24.

Murray, who got into the finals of the 100 meters with a fifth place qualifying time of 12.69 blasted in the finals later in the day with a second place 12.62 improvement behind Jada Williams of Westside High’s 12.17 winning time. Murray finished fifth in 13.00 in the 2016 district race with Williams third.

In the 200, Murray had the same plan with a fifth place qualifier at 25.97 turned in a slower fourth place split of 26.27 which was enough to advance to the regional meet. Williams won the 200 in 24.77. Murray was third in last year’s district final in 26.84.

Clay also had a district champion in the girls discus with junior Kelley Catlett winning with a 103’-7” toss over teammate Alyssa Willliford’s 90’-5” toss. Catlett improved from third in 2016 in the discus.

Rodgers improved from a fourth place in last year’s district meet with his title run with teammate Joaquin Castro, fifth last year, getting a region ticket with his third place finish.

Others athletes from Clay that finished in the top four to advance to regions were Katie James, a sophomore, with a fourth in 1:02.08 in the 400. James was fourth in last year’s district final in 1:03.49 that was won by Ridgeview’s Chereece McEwan in 1:01.68.

In the relays; Clay’s girls 4 x 400 relay; Katie James, Alexis Stilianou, Kathryn Dziqulski and Devin Linton took fourth in 4:25.36 to Bolles’ winning split of 4:05.96.

In the boys 4 x 800 relay; Gabriel Galarza, Jarrell Lestrick, Benjamin Hathaway and Oliver West took fourth in 8:51.46 to Bishop Kenny’s winning time of 8:25.00.

Athletes from Ridgeview finishing in the top four included sophomore Jaden Roy, who high jumped 6’-.75” to repeat his third place finish (at 5’-8”) from last year; pole vaulter Adrian Cepeda, a senior, who cleared 10’-11.75” for second (fifth in 2016); triple jumper Aniya Marshall, a junior, who jumped 34’-4.25” for third place; triple jumper Crystal Hunter, a junior, who jumped 34’-2” for fourth and triple jumpers Devon Fertil, a senior, and Jacolbi Sampson, a junior, who finished second and third, respectively, with Fertil jumping 44’-.5” and Sampson jumping 42’-7.5”. Fertil also finished third in the discus at 127’-7” and second in the 400 in 53.21 with teammate Mathew Koziolek fourth in 54.23. Fertil and Sampson finished third and fourth in 2016 in the triple jump. Fertil was third in discus last year.

In girls shot put, Ridgeview sophomore Grier Burrows took third with a 32’-10.25” put.

Ridgeview sophomore hurdler Joaquin Castro finished third in 17.06 in the 110 meter hurdles with Rodgers winning in 15.80 to advance both to regions.

In the relays, Ridgeview’s girls 4 x 100; Jamyah Harkins, Autumn Woodard, Aniya Marshall and Chereece McEwan, took third in 51.12 behind Bolles’ winning split of 48.94. In the boys 4 x 400, Ridgeview’s boys team; Julian Suarez-Vanegas, Mathew Koziolek, Courtney Rocket and Fertil, took fourth in 3:39.06 behind Bishop Kenny’s winning split of 3:31.88.

Bolles’ distance runners, led by junior Caitlin Collier for the girls and Chase Rivera for the boys, dominated the 800, 1600 and 3200 with Collier winning all three in state-ranked times and Rivera winning the 800 and 1600 events. Collier won the 800 and 1600 in last year’s district races with a third in the 3200.

In the boys 800, with Clay’s Oliver West a top county runner in that event, Rivera won in 1:59.59 with West in at sixth in 2:02.21. West had run a sub-two minute 800 during the season.

In the boys 1600, Rivera won in a fast 4:22.77 with Ridgeview’s Joel Nesi hitting 4:40.07 for fifth place and Clay senior Benjamin Hathaway ending his stellar career in 10th in 4:46.88.

In the boys 3200, Bishop Kenny’s James Kaczorowski won in 9:45.84 with Nesi sixth in 10:06.91 and teammate Keith Kelley 10th in 10:40.33.

Advancing the 2016 state meet, Ridgeview had just Cra’Sean Carey; shot put and discus, and Mozart Louis-Charles; shot put, advance to the 2A state meet last year. Both are graduated. Clay had no state meet athletes last year.
