PANAMA CITY BEACH – Weightlifters Brooke Berger of Clay and Lexi Perez of Oakleaf finished second in their respective Class 1A and Class 2A girls weightlifting championships held Fri.-Sat., Feb. 2-3 in Panama City Beach.
With Berger’s second place finish, Clay held on to finish tied for third in team points with River Ridge with Union County taking first ahead of Baker County. Berger, with a 325 total, finished just five pounds away from winner Alexis Hobbes of Weeki Wachee who finished at 330.
In Class 2A’s 154 pound weight class, Perez, for a second week, finished behind champion Hannah Goodrich of New Smyrna Beach, who won the region title over Perez a week ago. Perez, also in a repeat finish of the past two competitions; districts and regions, finish atop of Middleburg’s Jay Pena who was third at the state meet. Goodrich topped the two Clay County lifters with her 370 total with Perez at 350 and Penz at 340. For Ridgeview, freshman Alysia Hall snagged a first-time medal at third in the Class 1A 119-pound division with a 285 total. Repeat state champ Ryah Davis of Baker County took top honors at 320.
Fleming Island had one lifter, Jaeden Fernandez at 169, who failed to get a clean and jerk lift.
Taking thirds were Carlie Mcrae of Clay in 139 and Sidney Nelson of Ridgeview at 169.
