Bats stop Lady Broncos; Raiders, Spartans hottest teams in county

ORANGE PARK – In one of the more unique endings to a basketball game, a cadre of bats in the gym forced the Lady Broncos of Middleburg to halt a major matchup with 9A-Sandalwood at the half with the Broncos up 27-20.

Middleburg entered the game against Sandalwood with a solid holiday slate; two wins, one loss, in Orlando.

Middleburg’s biggest target to finish the season is a January 15 date with district leader Nease who bombed Middleburg by 40 in their first clash.

Orange Park opened 2019 with a last-gasp loss to Ribault, but after a string of wins to take the Jarvis Williams title in Palatka. The Lady Raiders fast games to finish 2018 may have made for some heavy legs at Ribault, but coach Fred Cole has the horsepower to regroup and surge through the district. Look out for Ridgeview as a spoiler.

St. Johns Country Day School has a handful of excitable young players led by sharpshooter Kendall Sage and have kept the W column busy with just one loss. St. Johns opens 2019 with St. Joseph Academy; the lone winner over the Spartans, on January 9.

Keystone Heights put a five game win streak to bed just before the holiday and come in on top of the district lineup.

Fleming Island has had excruciating losses to date and will need some third quarter mojo to compete with district leaders Bartram Trail and Creekside.
