MIDDLEBURG – In a hot, steamy afternoon of youth football at the Middleburg Athletic Association field, the Oakleaf Knights and Middleburg Broncos 6-Under teams both outlasted overtime clashes with wins Saturday.

In the Oakleaf Knights versus Callahan clash, a 6-6 tie after regulation time, it was Oakleaf running back Ryan King sweeping left to paydirt for the Knights’ win.

On the Callahan offensive series; four downs from the 20 yard line, it was defensive end Zane Miller who stopped the third down off tackle play by Callahan and a tackle from King on the goal line to seal the win.

In the Middleburg vs. Callahan game that followed, the regulation time score ended at 18-18 in the fast-moving game that saw numerous coast-to-coast scoring runs on both sides; Colton Cooper for 60 yards on his first carry for the Broncos.

Callahan answered twice with their own outside blasts to go up 12-6 with 10:42 left in the half.

Middleburg kept sending Cooper off tackle with Brantley Pass getting yardage as well, but the score stuck until the half. A shoestring tackle by Cooper kept a break away run by Callahan from upping the score just before the break.

In the second half, Cooper again found green grass off left tackle and sprinted 65 yards to paydirt looking like John Riggins.

Callahan put up their own 65 yarder on their first play to go up again 18-12 at the 17:00 mark of the second half.

A fumbled snap and an incomplete pass by Bronco quarterback Antonio Archuleta slowed the Bronco attack with Archuleta going 15 yards on a third and five play keeping the drive alive.

Despite two more fumbled snaps, the Broncos got a nine yard scoring run from Benton Leino to tie the game at 18-18 with 9:41 left in the game.

Middleburg took a late lead at 24-18 with Archuleta punching in from three yards out, but Callahan kept pace with a four yard plunge with :19 left in the game to force the overtime.

With both teams getting a first down at the 20 yard line, Callahan struck first with a 15 yard run to the one getting a scoring punch on the fifth play of the series.

Middleburg got a quick score from Archuleta to tie the game in two plays to force a second overtime.

Archuleta again scored; from four yards out to put Middleburg up 36-30. Callahan had two carries shut down with thunderous tackles from Leino, but found the end zone on third down; 36-36, to go into overtime three. In the final overtime attempt, Leino again came up with two big tackles in the middle of the Callahan offense to disrupt their attempt to get a score. A final tackle for loss by Bryan Pfeifer ended the Callahan offensive surge.

With a final series for the Broncos, Cooper wiggled through five Callahan tacklers to break out and score on first down to win the game, 42-36.
