Ascension St. Vincent’s Clay distributes 400 meals on Thanksgiving
Local hospital, local agencies continues 27-year tradition
MIDDLEBURG – Volunteers and associates from Ascension St. Vincent’s prepared approximately 850 warm Thanksgiving meals for local families in need.
It was the 27th consecutive year the health system has prepared the meals. Ascension St. Vincent’s Clay County prepared 400 meals, while the Riverside facility prepared approximately 450 meals, using:
• 1,300 pounds of turkey
• 240 pounds of green beans
• 300 pounds of potatoes
• 125 pounds of cornmeal for dressing
• 80 pounds of fresh cranberries
• 75 fresh baked pies
The health system continued to ensure all appropriate COVID-19 precautions were taken, including wearing personal protective equipment when preparing the meals, as well as screenings and universal masking.
“COVID-19 has changed a lot about how we all live and work, but one thing that remains the same is our commitment to caring for our community both within the walls of our facilities and outside of them,” said Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast President and CEO Tom VanOsdol. “Without this team effort, hundreds of people might otherwise go without a warm Thanksgiving meal. We’re so thankful to all of our partners and volunteers for preparing and delivering the meals to local families in need.”
Ascension St. Vincent’s partners with Aging True Community Senior Services to identify meal recipients. Aging True serves 6,000 clients annually in the Northeast Florida area.
"We've been extremely grateful and fortunate to have partnered with Ascension St. Vincent’s, zTrip and numerous volunteer groups for nearly three decades to ensure our most frail, elderly seniors receive a special sense of caring and community Thanksgiving Day," said Aging True Community Senior Services CEO Teresa K. Barton. "Our partnership is even more critical this year as the pandemic has paused, to a tremendous degree, family togetherness and traditions."
In Clay County, the health system partners with community organizations including the Green Cove Springs Police Department, Orange Park Police Department, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and several local churches to deliver the meals to needy families.
