Arvinger faces Mack in a college hoops clash

Daytona State College second year guard Destiny Arvinger, an Oakleaf High standout, has the Falcons in line for another shot at a conference title with a 16.8 points per game average with 3.4 assists and two steals per game.

Orange Park High grad Shakarri Mack is strong presence in middle of College of Central Florida Lady Patriots basketball team with an 8.6 points per game average with 4.4 rebounds.

OCALA– Two Clay County womens basketball superstars were able to battle against each other Saturday night at their respective colleges as Destiny Arvinger; an Oakleaf High point guard, now a second year player for Daytona State College, traveled with her team to Ocala to take on Orange Park High superstar Shakarri Mack at her College of Central Florida home court in downtown Ocala.

With Mack showing off some jump shot prowess early in the game to go with her strong rebound presence for the Patriots and Arvinger being the swingman ballhandler for the Falcons, a second half surge led to a 73-61 win for Daytona State.

Daytona State, ranked ninth in the NJCAA Region 8 Women’s basketball polls as of January 8, improved to 14-8 overall with a 1-1 conference slate with Arvinger a 20-game starter with 16.8 points per game average with 3.4 assists per game and almost two steals per contest. The Falcons sit in second place in the NJCAA Region 8/Mid-Florida Conference standings behind Santa Fe College; 11-9, 2-0.

Mack, also a sophomore, has started 14 of 14 games this year with an 8.6 points per game average with 4.4 rebounds per game. The Patriots are 4-15 overall, but are still competitive in conference play, also at 1-1. College of Central Florida sits in third in the Mid-Florida Conference above Florida State College at Jacksonville (6-13, 0-2).

In 2016, College of Central Florida played in the FCSAA State playoffs; losing to eventual champion Gulf Coast State College 90-51 in the first round.
