Letter to the Editor: Wal-Mart and Hard Liquor? Just say no.

Posted

When I say Wal-Mart, what comes to mind? Groceries? Toys? Electronics? Hunting? Fishing? Automotive? Well, what if I were to say Wal-Mart and Hard Liquor? Well, that is exactly what is on the minds of several in our state’s Capitol at the moment.

Did you know that these out-of-state retailers are pushing legislation this session to change existing Florida law to allow them to sell hard liquor on the same aisles that groceries and other goods are sold?

Senate Bill 106 would do just that and is slated to be heard in committee in Tallahassee this month. In fact, it is going to be heard in a committee that is headed by our Sen. Travis Hutson(R-Jacksonville).

For over 40 years, my family has owned Foremost Liquors & Wines in Orange Park. This legislation would severely hamper the ability for small businesses like mine to make a living, would severely hurt the men and women that rely on us for a job to provide shelter and food for their families every day, and would severely put additional strain on our public safety.

I ask our local representative, Senator Hutson, to have our backs on this. We need your support in Tallahassee. We cannot give this type of advantage to large corporations who want nothing more than to take over our local stores. Oppose Senate Bill 106.
